ICP-MS: trace elemental analysis

By lab2date Admin

Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) measures elements and isotopes at parts-per-trillion levels. An argon plasma at ~7000 K atomises and ionises the sample; a mass spectrometer counts the ions.

Why labs use it

  • Heavy-metal testing in pharma (ICH Q3D), food and water.
  • Multi-element screening in a single fast run.
  • Isotope-ratio measurements.

Compared with ICP-OES, ICP-MS offers far lower detection limits but higher running cost and more demanding interference management.
